What is Child and Teen Counseling?

Separation or divorce can amplify the challenges children and teens already face.  Seemingly resilient kids may suddenly begin to struggle.  Our child and teen counselors specialize in helping kids understand what is happening in their life and find solutions.

What Age Children is Counseling Appropriate For?

All ages of children can benefit from Child Counseling – from toddlers to teenagers.

How Do I Know If My Child or Teen Needs Therapy?

Separation or divorce naturally brings up a lot of different emotions.  Children or teens may feel angry.  Or, if parents were constantly arguing, there may be some relief.  Sometimes, kids blame themselves for the separation or divorce.  If you notice a change in your child or teen - an outgoing kid becomes quiet and withdrawn, your good student begins to struggle in school, your easy-going kid becomes angry and disrespectful, it may be time to reach out for some professional help.

How Can Counseling Help My Child or Teen?

Counseling offers children and teens solutions.  Our counselors provide a safe space to explore their feelings around the changes in their family and make sense of their experiences.  Counseling can give children and teens strategies to navigate their parents’ separation or divorce.  Outcomes are increased self-confidence, decreased stress and anxiety and increased communication skills.

How Does Child & Teen Counseling Work?

For younger children, who might not be able to fully verbalize a situation, “play therapy” can allow them to show the counselor what they are experiencing.  With older children, the counselor may utilize a combination of play and talk therapy.  And, of course, for teenagers, simply talking through issues with a non-judgmental listener is effective.  As appropriate, the counselor may also meet with parents and / or the child and parents together.
